The weekend atmosphere.

Normally I get into work around 9am during the weekdays and see Michael and Yasmin. They look my way as I pass, flash me a grin and a “Morning Logan” and on they go with their business. By then they have been there for hours along with eight other OMN crew members so things are always buzzing and people are everywhere.

I worked my first weekend shift this past Saturday and the atmosphere was a total 360 from what I’m used to. Charlie, Jimmy, Elyse and Gary greeted me. Still with smiles of course, but what was so different was there was only those four in the whole office. And boy, was it quiet. I was able to do all the work I do in a normal weekday in half the time on Saturday. Slowly, but surely new faces walked in and by 1pm more people filled the office and fun was in the air. Gary was playing some oldies tunes in the background and everything was just so laid back.

Speaking of Gary, he’s the weekend producer and a very interesting guy. He gave me a little lesson about the editing bay, which of course I loved! He told me the importance of making the visuals match what the anchors are talking about because the second you make the viewer “think” is when you loose them. Gary likes to take his time with the editing aspect of the production. During the week there are so many upcoming news stories that being fast is key, but Gary made it clear that editing the piece and taking a little extra time is what makes the news the anchors deliver entertaining to watch. Gary really knew what he was talking about and I could tell he really took pride in his job. It was interesting to see how differently Gary and Aaron produce the show. What I thought was going to be a VERY slow day at the office turned out being one of the most interesting days here!

You are cordially invited to celebrate the end of our marriage! Eat, drink and be marry as we put on our best fake smiles for one last time as a not-so-happy couple! Okay, now this story is bizarre. Check it out.

The Town Magazine did a photo-shoot for the One Minute News team talking about all the great things to come from these guys. I love this picture of the anchors. Paul Mehaffey did a great job bringing out their personalities:
Vanessa, she’ll tell you what she’s thinking in a heart beat.
Scott, I bet you five bucks he was really screaming. You can hear him coming from a mile away.
Yasmin, she’s serious about news but has a playful side you wouldn’t expect. Not to mention her hair is to die for.
Elyse, I think I’ve seen her make this face when she sees there’s an Entertainment segment coming her way. It’s not her favorite topic to cover.
Jennifer, she did a segment on doing the “duck face” so it’s quite ironic she’s making one here. Total sweetheart by the way.
This is Mack’s best, “I’m the boss, fear me” expression. Don’t let it fool you though, he’s a big kid at heart.
Oh Krittika. She was the first anchor to befriend me. This is probably just the first thing that popped into her head. Which is weird because she normally walks around with a skip in her step and a grin on her face.
Jim, he just became a proud new daddy not too long ago (hints the goldfish).
Julia, she’s crazy about sports.
Charlie, this might be the first and only picture that doesn’t give his good looks justice.
Mark, I haven’t worked with him enough to make an assumption but I’m intrigued. I can’t read his expression.
And last but not least Elizabeth, she’s a feisty one when it comes to talking about news she’s passionate about.
Okay so, I know I haven’t worked with these guys for long but this is what I read from this picture of the gang.

I did my first paid editing job last week! My best friends mom, Mrs. Ray asked me to create a video about passion. She is speaking to a group of 2,000 people about how you need to be passionate in order to be leaders in the church community. It was really difficult to do what my client wanted and still make it visually appealing and powerful. I was talking to Josh, an editor at One Minute News the other day. He said that when people that don’t edit have a vision it’s more difficult to please them because although they have an idea he knows before he even begins editing if its going to look right or not. I was able to understand what he meant while working on this project. It’s important and takes skill to find the happy medium between doing what you want and satisfying your client. Mrs. Ray was really happy about the final cut and you know what, so was I. Anymore takers out there? I’m open for business!

Okay, I’ve never been left at the alter and I hope that nightmare never comes true for me, but for this woman it did and she took the break up to a whole new extreme. She dangled herself from a seven story building wearing…yep you guessed it, her wedding dress. I kind of want to beat up the coward that left her but instead I’ll let Julia Lopez give him some advice for the commitment-phobe he seems to be. I also have a feeling that the ex-bride has an identity crisis coming her way so here’s some tips for her. I’d hate to leave her hanging.

I believe people work better in a nice work environment and if that means dazzling up the office, I’m on it! Today I worked on new name-tags for everyone’s lockers. Before I did the name-tag makeover everyone claimed their lockers with post-it notes. I’ve been wanting to get my hands on those post-it notes since my first day here so I finally took initiative and did! It’s a small gesture, but I always like it when my things look nice and everyone is too busy to think to do it on their own. There were a few weird looks when people passed by my desk and saw what I was doing, but deep down I think they appreciated it. I know I would.

News worth covering.

Well, I’m back at One Minute News on this Monday morning so I guess by now you should know the rapture didn’t happen. It’s time to start talking about some real news that’s worth covering. The natural disasters that have been sweeping our nation since April are devastating. Deadly weather and more tornadoes hit Missouri early this morning. 75% of the city is destroyed. I sometimes talk about how their is never any good news in the media. However, covering stories like these can make a difference. It gets the word out that these people are desperate for help. Without these stories people other than those affected might not even know about it. So I’m trying to look at the news differently this morning. As a way to help those who need it most. Call me naive, but I believe we can use the news to save the world one story at a time.

I should probably work on my excessive use of “so”…

My first day.

The first thing I saw when I stepped through the double doors of One MInute News was an anchor wearing curlers in her hair, zoned into her computer and rehearsing what I assumed would be the next segment on the One Minute News site. From that second on I knew I was in for a very entertaining summer. This made me smile and my nerves slowly chipped away as I was introduced to all the people that make One Minute News a success. Everyone was memorable for different reasons, but the main reason why I was so entertained with the girl wearing curlers was because all I had seen until now was the perfect cut from the site. It only took me one day to realize that the anchors I had been following up on until my internship were “real” people just like myself. They don’t wake up looking camera ready, they need to practice to get better and they get nervous for gosh sake! My reason behind telling you about the girl with big curlers in her hair may partly be to make you giggle on this gloomy Monday, but It’s also to express that One Minute News is real, much like the news they deliver. They take pride in the details and I’m proud to be a part of something so cool.

Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes of a start up news station? Logan Phillips here and as an intern at One Minute News I've got the inside scoop!
